Congratulations to Makayla Kinard, on winning the Colorado Soccer Association’s Best Young Female Referee of the Year!

Makayla became a referee at age 12, and states: “I’ve enjoyed the challenges that being a referee has allowed me to face… It has helped build my character through perseverance in the face of adversity and showed me that I’m strong enough to handle difficult situations when they arise (as they often do out on the pitch). I enjoy learning the new rules as they come out, and try to ask questions when I’m paired with other referees who have more experience than I do. I feel as though using those who have come before me is my best tool to expand my knowledge and to get better at the craft of being an outstanding referee.”

Now 16, Makayla plays for the Denver Kickers U17 White team, as well as for her high school team at Jefferson Academy. Additionally, she is a Girl Scout, working on her Gold Award. She even started her own nonprofit organization, called One Monkey’s Miracle, whose mission is to raise money for diabetic supplies for struggling families.

Makayla received her award at the annual CSA banquet, held at the Marriot Denver Tech Center on January 25.
